What’s on our Portland Bucket List?

Apparently you can buy this bucket at Home Depot. Maybe we’ll get one to take on our big bike trip?

A couple months ago our niece was here visiting with her family and she asked us a great question. Knowing that we’d be leaving Portlandia in (holy shit!) less than 18 months she asked:

  • What are 4 things that you haven’t done yet that you want to do before you leave?
  • What are 4 things that you want to be sure to do again before you leave?

Mr. Grumby and I looked at each other and came up with a few ideas, but told her that we’d have to think about it. So, Melissa, here you have it. The answer to your questions right here at Grumbysonthemove. We came up with seven answers for each question and are eager to hear some input from our readers. Hopefully this post and any comments will also give visitors to Portland a few interesting ideas.

New Things

  1. Grand Floral Parade

Of course our power company had a Big Eclipse float at the parade.

(yes, we’ve both lived here well over a decade and 2017 was the first time we went to see this great Portland tradition)

  2. Portland Movies in the Park
  3. Oregon Historical Society
  4. Oregon Coast Railriders
  5. Ride our bikes to at least 2 new parks for weekend picnics
  6. Walk up and down NE Alberta Street to check out all of the cool murals
  7. Lunch at one of Portland’s food cart pods

Things to do Again

  1. Waterfall on the Eagle Creek hike

Go for a hike the the gorge with friends we met on 2005 Mt. Hood climb

  2. Hike the Eagle Creek trail with friends
  3. Dinner at Bernie’s Southern Bistro
  4. Ride the Leif Erickson-Saltzman Road loop
  5. Visit the Oregon coast
  6. Lunch at Kennedy School (where we had our wedding party)
  7. Go to a movie at Hollywood Theater

The best thing about checking these things off our list is that we’ll be able to share some of these experiences with friends and family.

Great ideas! Mr. G has hiked Oneonta Gorge a couple of times, but I never have. Would love to check it out.

And Saturday Market is an awesome way to support local artists and is one of Portland’s best people-watching venues.

I still need to do the 4 T’s
    Trail, tram, train, trolley

    Have you done this ?

Good one! Yes, we did 4T’s a couple of years ago and it was great! Especially seeing Mr. G. in the tram (he’s a little afraid of heights).

      Thanks for adding the idea!

One more thing I did many years ago was ride a navy ship in from Longview to the Rose Festival. It was cool my boys were young and it there was a huge BBQ party on the back and tours of the ship.

Oh and don’t forget to climb Mount St. Helens in a dress to honor our moms on Mother’s Day weekend.

Awesome you got to do the Navy ship experience with your boys. Was that post-9/11?

And, yes! The Mother’s Day St. Helens climb! I’m not sure how we’ve managed to miss that opportunity so many times. If it doesn’t make this year’s list, that’s one we’ll have to come back for.

      Thanks again for stopping by!

I’ve only been there once (!) but totally missed Voodoo donuts that time. I am also intrigued by the food cart pods!! You should definitely go visit those once or twice before you leave – the reviews on them are awesome! I would also love to go back to Kennedy School and spend some time hanging out there – it was one of the coolest places ever to have your wedding party!

Thanks Dee Ann! We’ll write about what we discover at the food cart pods.

And … I’ve never been to Voodoo donuts. Might have to add that to the list!

Agree with Sarah – Saturday market is a must every time we are there. I even have a tattoo of a piece that a local artist drew for me while we were there.

    VooDoo Donuts is another one.

There is a Japanese garden close to VooDoo that was cool & they have a really nice tea & sake bar.

Andy & Bax for outdoorsy folks – there are a couple of shops in that area that are cool.

Wow! I didn’t know you had a tattoo inspired by a Portland artist – cool!

      Great ideas.

Andy & Bax definitely has cool stuff and Next Adventure is closeby and also has great outdoor gear, including a basement stocked with awesome used stuff!

Melissa and I love the honkin’ huge burrito food cart at pioneer square and Cadillac cafe.

And I always loved the triple falls hike.

Honkin’ Huge! I got ther burritos a couple of times when I worked downtown. Yummmm.

We love Cadillac Cafe too. Still delicious, but prices went up when the new owners took over.

Triple Falls – another awesome hike! Thanks for sharing your ideas. :0)
